Sci-Lit Connector
Linking Looking???

Looking for ways to link science with children's literature? Your language arts series is a really good place to start. Our review of the five most widely used language arts textbooks series now used in K-6 schools shows that 40 % to 60 % of the stories can be connected to science experiences in the classroom. Following is just a sample of the stories found in Harcourt's Trophies-a series with close to 60 % of the stories having potential for literature-science linking relationships.

A first grade class reading "How to Become a Nature Detective" can make, observe, and classify their own fingerprints. A third grade class reading "Starry, Starry Night" can make constellation models of the Big Dipper, Draco, Cepheus, and others. A fifth grade class reading "Summer of Fire" and "Smoke Jumpers" can construct and test parachutes.

In linked literature-science lessons (many examples can be found in the QuickPlans on this web site, www.scilitlinks.org ), science provides the concrete experiences to help children make sense of the language arts experiences. They read with understanding, they write from experience, and they exhibit better thinking skills. Look for links!
