| We made blue jello aquariums linked it to the book Swimmy. I'm sure you all remember some of the passages and photos. Well, they reminded me of candy. Then, when I was at the supermarket, I found gummy sharks and fish and turtles..... that got me thinking! In a gourmet candy shop I found gummy octopi, eels (ok, so they were worms) marshmallow filled licorice sticks, and dolphins. That's when it came to me but, I had to get blue jello sent from the States. We used those clear plastic vegetable trays that I got from a supermarket. All you need is an electric kettle to boil the water. One cup of hot and one cup of cold ! You put a bit of jello in and let the kids make the bottom of the ocean. While that it setting you've got just enough time to cut out the fish for making the school of fish (a la Swimmy). Then you add the rest. We let the kids use their imaginations and they cut off the tips of the octopus and planted them upside down to make anenomes. They cut little bits of candy filled licorice off for rocks and cut red licorice up to make coral. At the top of the ocean they floated the turtles and dolphins. We put it all in the fridge and by the time we finished playing the "school of fish and tuna games” it was all set and ready to take home--after they had nibbled around a bit!! We have a unit in literature called "Wonders of the Sea" and a unit in our science text on water habitats where they learn about what lives in the different layers. We connected them for a wonderful Sci-Lit Links experience! |
