Sci-Lit Connector
Down and Dirty in Madrid

Amy Mechling, a Sci-Lit Links instructor, presented a science-literature linked program during the MAIS Conference in Madrid. Titled “Down and Dirty Science,” Amy had participants observe and make inferences about mystery critters that turned out to be Isopods—sow bugs, pill bugs or rolypolies. Teachers examined the Isopods with bug boxes, observed and discussed their characteristics and behavior, shared poems written by her Immaculate Conception (Clarion, PA) students, and linked the science activity with two interesting books about Isopods, Rolypolyology and A Pill Bug’s Life.

The following photos show the MAIS participants doing “Down and Dirty Science.”

Participants observe the mystery critter

Magnifying lenses and bug boxes were the tools for “Down and Dirty Science.”

“Hey…these things are small!”

“Mine won’t stay put!”

“What’s the belly look like?”

“Look at what its doing now!"

Amy questions participants about their observations.

The group shares information about Isopods.

In the highlight of the presentation, participants learn about the sex life of an Isopod.
