Rome: The Return of the K-3 Alumni

“The Return of….” may sound like the title of a scary movie, but in this case “The Return of….” was K-3 teacher Alumni who were with us in MAIS K-3 Sci-Lit Links in Madrid in 2001. They returned to us in Rome at the MAIS Conference to share some of their Sci-Lit observations and experiences from this past year.

Returning alumni included Flavia Burton of Benjamin Franklin International School in Spain, Dorothy Kerfai of the American Cooperative School of Tunis, Tunisia, Dawn Theelke Thomas substituting for Katie Kane of the American International School of Lisbon in Portugal, Kathy Cromartie of Casablanca American School in Morocco, Carla Beltramini of the International School of Trieste, Italy, and Amy Mechling of Immaculate Conception School in Clarion, PA.

Their session was very well attended by interested teachers who were not disappointed by what they heard and did. Flavia had us folding and cutting paper in unique ways for primary children to make and write their own books. Dorothy described her work with the book, The Carrot Seed, which included investigations with planting and germinating seeds. Dawn described the children’s construction and use of balancing objects in conjunction with the book, Mirette on a High Wire. Kathy described humorous accounts with make-believe animal scat or “poop” based on the book, The Story of the Little Mole Who Went in Search of Whodunit. Carla described her self-designed experiences in making a model aquarium made of blue Jello and populated with ocean critters. Amy described her student’s experiences with microscopes and the processes of science using two books, Two Bad Ants and Zoom.

Participants agreed that the session was very useful, practical, and interesting. The end of the session left all wanting to learn more. Our sincere thanks to all presenters for sharing neat ideas and to all attendees for their active, enthusiastic participation.

The following photos highlight The Return of the K-3 Madrid Alumni:

Dr. Ken Mechling, Sci-Lit Project Director, introduces the Alumni program, challenging participants to see the “spectrum” of opportunities for linking children’s literature and science from a new and unique perspective.

The presenters are lined up and ready to share.

Flavia gets us off to an enthusiastic start by having us construct our own books.

Dorothy shares photos of her work with children and teachers.

Kathy introduces some books she has used in her classroom.

Then she has us in stiches with her reading and activity description of The Story of the Little Mole Who Went in Search of Whodunit.

Carla describing her “infamous” blue Jello aquarium and its tragic trip to the MAIS Conference.

Dawn describes and demonstrates balance activities used in conjunction with Mirette on a High Wire.

Dawn shares photos and descriptions of the balancing acts investigated by her students.

Amy reads a portion of the story Two Bad Ants and describes how she combines the story with the study of microscopes. She stresses learning process skills like observing, inferring, classifying, communicating, and investigating.

Carla and Dussie show their pleasure with all the ideas presented by the Returning Alumni. Well done everyone!
