The following photographs are scenes from the 2001 Sci-Lit Links Instructional Phase in Madrid:

Amy Mechling, a Sci-Lit Links instructor, leads participants in the construction of a model of the life cycle of a butterfly. Following constructivist instructional strategies, the model will be built before the story is read.

Teacher participants color coffee filters which will eventually become the bodies of the model butterflies.

Colored filters are dunked into water and teachers learn about chromatography.

Chromatography progress is checked.

Susan is pleased with the almost-finished product, soon to become the butterfly body of the adult stage of the life cycle

Amy now reads the book, From Caterpillar to Butterfly.

Sci-Lit Links participants now finish their models of complete metamorphosis.

The learning experience linking science and reading ends with a song led by Katie. Participants sing while simulating with hand movements the stages of a butterfly’s life cycle.
