2001 Madrid K-3 Teacher Training Session
Sounds, Trees & Fish
1 2 3 4 5

Dr. Ken Mechling, Sci-Lit Links instructor and project director, teaches about sound, making soda straw kazoos to test vibration, pitch and amplitude.

The Sci-Lit Links orchestra practices with their kazoos. Dr. Mechling followed the sound activities by reading the book, Sounds All Around.

Amy begins the next series of activities on trees by reading the book, Once There Was a Tree. Children’s literature in Sci-Lit Links is sometimes read before the activities, sometimes during, and sometimes at the end.

Participants return from an outdoor leaf collecting expedition, observe leaf characteristics, and make and compare leaf prints.

Dr. Mechling has the participants make fish sticks, classify themselves into schools, and avoid predatory tuna. These simulations were connected with the popular children’s book, Swimmy.
