Amy begins a science/technology activity by reading partway through the book, Little Lumpty… to the point where the main character, Little Lumpty, an egg, is perched on a high wall and is about to jump. |
Using only 8 sheets of paper and 25 cm of masking tape, teams of Sci-Lit Link teachers have the task of building egg-catchers into which Little Lumpty can jump-without breaking. |
The egg catchers take shape. |
Shock-absorbing designs are considered. |
Design ideas are all different. |
Flavia really gets into pre-testing her team’s cone-shaped egg catcher. |
Now for the egg drop tests, beginning at one meter and increasing by half-meter increments. |
Eggcitement is evident! |
Some teams try to ensure drop accuracy with a homemade plumb bob. |
Optimism prevails…but the splash zone is covered with plastic-just in case. |
Aim is variable. Unfortunately for Lumpty, no team’s egg survived a two meter drop. |
With the egg drops completed, Amy finishes reading Little Lumpty and the teams discuss how they could redesign their egg catchers to make them more effective. Building an egg catcher and reading Little Lumpty combines science and technology with children’s literature. |
