| | 2001 Madrid K-3 Teacher Training Session Penguins and other experiences

K-3 teachers participated in many other science-literature linked experiences-some with magnetism, others with button classification, and still others with animal camouflage. In this photo, participants have investigated seeds and now tape germination chambers to windows. The book, Miss Rumphius, was the literature connection. |
| Dr. Mechling teaches about emperor penguins, having participants simulate getting a just laid egg off the ice and onto the top of their feet for insulation and incubation. |
| Participants waddle like penguins, moving into a huddle to simulate an adaptative behavior protecting them from brutally low Antarctic temperatures of –110 F and winds of up to 180 mph. The penguin activities were linked to several books: Antarctica, The Emperor’s Egg, and Antarctic Antics. |
| Sci-Lit participants were also grouped by grade levels and prepared for their home-school roles as Sci-Lit Links implementation and dissemination leaders. |
| They discussed ideas for linking science and children’s literature. |
| They prepared QuickPlans to share with their home-school colleagues and add to the Sci-Lit Links web site www.scilitlinks.org |
| With the Sci-Lit Links MAIS Pre-Conference ended, participating K-3 teachers came back for more in a MAIS program session called “Down and Dirty,” linking the classroom study of Isopods ( rolypolies, sowbugs, pillbugs) to reading and writing. A good time was had by all at the Madrid MAIS K-3 Sci-Lit Links programs. |
