In this observational investigation, participants explore seashore sand. They find evidence of the animals and plants and study the nature and composition of sand.

Tools included a plastic spoon, magnifying lens, and a piece of black construction paper.

Ed, an elementary school principal, finds crab exoskeletons, bones, mollusk parts, and litter.

This activity, called Beachcomber, was related to the book Out of the Ocean. The QuickPlan for Beachcomber can be found in the QuickPlan section of this web site.

Participating educators, principals and teachers, work together combining science and children's literature in the Rome 2002 MAIS Conference. Reactions: "Very interesting!" "I learned lots of new stuff." "This program, Sci Lit Links, opened my eyes and my mind to a whole new way of teaching. I loved it!"
